Georgia Barber Career Guide: Training and Next Steps

A barber career in Georgia begins with understanding the training and licensing path. Requirements differ depending on whether you pursue Master Barber or Barber II, so it is important to use current Georgia State Board information rather than outdated hour requirements.
Choose Your Training Path
Under Georgia's current school curriculum, Master Barber training is a 1,500-hour program and Barber II training is a 1,140-hour program. Apprenticeship is a separate pathway with different hour and time requirements.
Complete the Required Training
For school-based Master Barber training, Georgia requires 280 hours of theory before a student renders clinical services. For Barber II, the required initial theory portion is 190 hours. The remaining curriculum includes practical training and other required instruction.
Prepare for Georgia Licensing
Georgia requires applicants for Master Barber and Barber II licensure by examination to pass written and practical examinations. Applicants then submit the required licensing application, documentation, and fee to the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology and Barbers.
Build Professional Skills
Technical ability is only part of building a barber career. Client service, sanitation, reliability, communication, time management, and continued skill development all matter once you begin working professionally.
